Modern Living Room And Furniture

By Darren Hartley

Modern living room design infuses a contemporary style into a home space while retaining its warmth and comfort. A modern aesthetic is relatively simple to achieve with some basic design know-how, regardless if it is done to attract buyers, entertain friends or just enjoy some peace and quiet.

Because white, cream and beige walls are staples of modern living room design, the walls of a modern living room should use soft, light and neutral colors. The minimization of dynamic pops of color for visual interest is one aspect of modern design. For easier standing out of focal artwork or modern living room furniture, the walls are made to serve as a neutral palette.

The modern living room floors are kept neutral and nondescript. They may even utilize bare concrete floors. A neutral-colored floor takes the focus off the surface to allow important modern living room furniture, artwork or accessories to be the ones capturing the eye.

Overly shaggy carpets are not part of a modern living room design and neither are carpets that contain intense and bright colors. It is a recommendation to use modern living room furniture that are both rigidly shaped and comfortable as well as coffee tables and sofas with straight lines and strong geometric shapes.

In general, major modern living room furniture pieces must be asymmetrical. Modern sofas with minimalistic shapes and rigid looks abound on the market. These sofas, however, are surprisingly comfortable. For occasional asymmetry, throw pillows may be added to the modern living room design. These pillows also add pops of color to the space.

Modern living room furniture should consist of darker colors to provide stark contrast to the white walls for designs with the furniture pieces as a focal point. For designs with the artwork as the focal point, the corresponding modern living furniture used should consist of lighter colors.

To personalize the modern living room with the sense of style of its homeowner, artwork may be used. Offering a number of interesting styles, modern artwork varies widely, from multicolored abstract to monochromatic minimalist artwork.
