Interesting Michigan State Trivia

If your future plans involve attending Michigan State University then it's wise to learn a little more about this educational institution, such as the fact that in the United States it has the ninth largest student body. Michigan State, the home of the Spartans, is one of the top universities in the United States, and here is a little more about it.

Michigan State is the nation's first and oldest college of agriculture and actually was known as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan when its doors opened in 1855. Back then, it was a school for men only and there were fewer than 65 students during the first year. In 1870 it became a co-educational university when a home economics major was added to the curriculum. In 1964, Michigan State University was adopted as its official name.

As a member of the Big Ten, MSU has had a long and distinguish athletic history. The university football team has participated in five Rose Bowls, the most recent of which was in 2014 where they defeated Stanford University. In their five Rose Bowl appearances, they have lost only once, back in 1966 to UCLA. The men's basketball team also has won two NCAA basketball championships, and is the alma mater of NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson. Overall, MSU offers a dozen intercollegiate sports for men and 13 for women.

MSU can definitely give you a variety of four-year or graduate degrees with its nearly 20 different colleges. Known for its College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, this school is still able to give you other colleges like veterinary medicine, human medicine, nursing, education, law, engineering, music and more. And in every college you choose you will have areas of study for you to earn a degree. Take for instance enrolling in the College of Arts and Letters will enable you to major a variety of areas like women's studies, languages, theater, history, philosophy, etc.

Social activities are an important part of campus life, and MSU has hundreds of different groups that you can join. No matter what interests you have, there is likely a club or group on campus that focuses on that interest. For instance, there is a geography club, a geology club, a Quidditch group, a ballroom dance team, many different religious-based clubs and even a club for people who love watching Doctor Who. There's something for everyone, and all students are encouraged to consider joining a few groups as a way to meet friends and socialize.
