Stamped Concrete Incorporates Blend Of Artistic Techniques

By Troy Wilkerson

There are a number of special techniques that are used on a driveway or other project. Stamped concrete is one of the most popular. The homeowner selects from a number of colors and patterns. The contractor who offers this finish is a skilled professional. The results can be as fancy as the homeowner wishes, with more than one pattern and color included in a single project.

There are a wide variety of colors that can be added to the mixture of cement and gravel being prepared prior to pouring a project. There are also hardeners that include color. These are shaken on after the pour. Depending on which method is used, the color will vary. One project, a driveway for example, can implement two or three different colors.

A skilled contractor can execute detailing by hand that results in an intricate overall design. Chemical staining, borders and sawcut designs can be implemented. The stamping process may include a wide array of finishes.

Right after a driveway or other project is poured, the contractor and his crew press molds into the concrete. This must be done at a specific time and finished before the surface can dry out. An expert will be able to time it correctly. Consideration of what is optimal will include circumstances such as outside temperature, wind velocity and whether the surface is in direct sunlight.

Coloring and stamping can be combined in one project. The use of hardening liquids and powders makes it possible. One project can contain a number of elements to give it an especially fancy appearance. It is sometimes a very time consuming task.

A homeowner is given the opportunity to consider an estimate prior to signing a contract. It is a good idea to get two or three estimates from different contractors. This will allow the homeowner time to decide if the added beauty of stamped concrete will fit within his or her budget.
