Anyone can suffer mild depression momentarily, especially if a loved one passes away. But, when a depression is at the clinical level, it affects every facet of life. The individual may be unable to work or participate in social activities.

There are more than a few types of depression. The major depressed mood lasts for a two week or longer period. Symptoms present are eating disorders, amnesia and trouble concentrating on anything.

Dysthymia exhibits many of the same symptoms. Although they have similarities, dysthymia is a milder disorder. The sufferer may lose some sleep, but not an entire night, for example.

After a baby is born, the mother may experience post-partum depression. The sleeping patterns or general health of the child does not affect her. This type can disappear on its own. However, a case may worsen without professional help.

Bipolar disorder makes an individual difficult to understand and nearly impossible to live with. On Monday he or she may be smiling and overactive. On Wednesday morning the mood may be one of complete desolation and inactivity.

The type of depression called seasonal affective disorder was not identified as an illness until recent times. It is one that occurs with the onset of winter. The lower degree of exposure to the sun is thought to be the causative factor. Using a sun lamp sometimes eases the sadness.

Depression with psychosis is relatively uncommon. It is, as the name indicates, an illness in which the sufferer has delusions and hallucinogenic behavior. Added are severe symptoms of depression. Professional treatment is mandatory in these cases.

Another psychotic condition is schizophrenia. It is a brain disorder in which the individual is delusional. Most schizophrenics imagine that someone is out to hurt them.

Disorganized schizophrenia is an even more severe mental illness. The individual cannot manage to feed himself or take care of showering and brushing his teeth. He may speak in a way that others cannot understand. He has outburst of rage at times.

Catatonic schizophrenia is an illness in which the person vacillates from a coma like state to a manic one. Professional treatment is required. If none is provided, he may remain in the catatonic state for more than a month at a time.

Children may also suffer from mental illnesses that afflict adults. They include anxiety disorders, mood disorders, depression for example and psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia. Children may be harder to diagnose.

The signs of mental illness in children are often unnoticed by friends and relatives. They tend to withdraw from sports and other recreational activities. Their behavior changes and they have intense emotional issues. Gone untreated, a disorder may cause a child to try to injure himself.

It is not necessary for these individuals to go without the treatment that would help. With port charlotte mental health care readily available, there is no need for them to suffer. In many cases the person can go from suicidal to relatively content with counseling and medication.
